Turkish Embassy in Dar es Salaam was first opened in 1979. However it was closed down in 1984 due to budgetary constraints. The Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Dar es Salaam was re-opened on 18 May 2009.

Relations between Turkey and Tanzania entered a new era in 2009. Bilateral relations gained a momentum with the first State Visit of the President of the Republic of Turkey, H.E. Mr. Abdullah Gül to the United Republic of Tanzania in February 2009 and the re-opening of the Turkish Embassy in Dar es Salaam in 2009.

H.E. Mr. Jakaya Kikwete, President of the United Republic of Tanzania paid a state visit to Turkey between 17 and 21 February 2010 upon the invitation of the President of the Republic of Turkey. H.E. Mr. Kikwete’s visit to Turkey was an important step since it was the first-presidential level visit from Tanzania to Turkey and reflected the momentum gained in bilateral relations.

Additionally, in 2010, the Chief of Tanzania Peoples' Defence Force (TPDF) Hon. Davis Mwamunyange, Speaker of the Tanzanian National Parliament Hon. Samuel Sitta and members of Tanzania-Turkey Parliamentary Friendship Group, Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hon. Bernard Membe paid visits to Turkey.

The President of Zanzibar H.E. Mr. Ali Mohamed Shein paid an official visit to Turkey between 28 April and 2 May 2011 upon the invitation of the President of the Republic of Turkey.

The 1st meeting of the Turkey-Tanzania Joint Economic Commission took place on 26-30 November 2012 in Dar es Salaam. On the occasion of the Meeting, two countries reviewed bilateral economic relations and evaluated additional possibilities of cooperation.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hon. Bernard Membe has paid an official visit to Turkey on 8-9 May 2014. Our Minister for Foreign Affairs Davutoğlu as well visited Tanzania at the end of May 2014. Minister Davutoğlu’s visit also coincided with the port visit of Turkish Barbaros Maritime Task Group which was making a tour around Africa visiting 25 ports in 24 countries.

The trade volume between the two countries was 151 million USD in 2015. The establishment of the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Tanzania and the launching of Turkish Airlines’ direct flights between Istanbul-Dar es Salaam on 14 June 2010 and Istanbul-Kılımanjaro on 4 December 2012 provided significant contributions to the trade volume between the two countries.
